Yu Xia Ge on Serangoon Road is selling a large bowl of prawn noodles for S$1.80 after cutting the usual S$10.80 price by nearly 90 per cent. The dish includes two large prawns. The restaurant opened at the end of February, and the S$1.80 offer was announced in early April.
A sign at the restaurant, shared online by customers, sets out the terms. The S$1.80 price is for dine-in only. Customers must follow Yu Xia Ge on TikTok, Facebook and Instagram, and each person can redeem one bowl.
The owner told Shin Min Daily News that it costs S$2.20 to make a bowl, so every promotional bowl is sold at a loss. The restaurant has been absorbing those losses rather than raising the promotional price.
Why the restaurant is selling below cost
Since the S$1.80 prawn noodles were announced in early April, the number of diners has nearly doubled. The owner said that was not a plan to make up for thinner margins with more volume. The offer is meant to thank customers who have supported the restaurant since it opened at the end of February.
During a period of rising living costs, the team also wants to support the community and to promote and preserve Singapore's traditional prawn noodles. Ingredient, utility and operating costs have been climbing, the owner said, which makes it hard to keep serving food this cheap. "But a few of us in the business agree that we hope to try our best to support Singaporeans during this tough time," he said.
"A lot of customers, especially the elderly and those with a lower income, have told us that this promotion has been a big help to them. Some also wished that we can always keep this price."
How long the S$1.80 price lasts
Shin Min reported that S$1.80 is a limited-time offer, but did not say when it will end. The team hopes to keep it going until energy and operating costs return to the more stable levels they were at before the recent situation in the Middle East, the owner said.
For now the price is still drawing customers from outside the neighbourhood. A woman told Shin Min she travelled from the northern part of Singapore after hearing about the promotional price. "I was mainly drawn by this very cheap price, and later I realised that the taste was also not bad," she said. A man who lives nearby has often visited with his family since the restaurant opened, and said he has noticed more customers recently.
