Walk Serangoon Road for Deepavali before the public holiday crush

The Ministry of Manpower lists Deepavali 2026 as Sunday 8 November. Monday 9 November is the in-lieu day if Sunday is your rest day. The street work starts much earlier. VisitSingapore's 2026 Deepavali page, last updated 20 August, sends you to Little India for the light-up, the Festival Village on Campbell Lane, food stalls and henna. The Little India Shop Owners and Heritage Association keeps the live calendar at deepavali.sg.

Deepavali Festival Village stalls on Campbell Lane, Little India

Start at Serangoon Road, not at NEX

Serangoon the neighbourhood and Serangoon Road the festival street are not the same trip. NEX sits above Serangoon MRT, two stops north of Little India on the North East Line. Moonlit Wonders at NEX, the mall's Mid-Autumn run, ends 25 September. If you only have one evening this month and you want Deepavali, get off at Little India (NE7/DT12) or Rochor (DT13). The arches live on Serangoon Road and Race Course Road. Campbell Lane is the pedestrian bazaar.

Ascott's family guide, published 26 June and updated 22 July 2026, lists the illumination as 19 September to 22 November. ParentLah lists 10 October to 8 November. Those dates do not match. I am not going to pretend LISHA has published a 2026 press sheet that I can quote. Check deepavali.sg the afternoon you go. Treat late September as the start of the season, not as a guaranteed switch-on night.

Past years ran the lights from about 7pm to midnight. That pattern is useful, not a 2026 contract. Dusk around 7pm is when the photos work and the pavement is still walkable. Deepavali weekend is a different animal. You will shuffle. You will smell incense, frying oil and jasmine at the same time. Wear shoes you can stand in.

What you actually buy on Campbell Lane

VisitSingapore names the Festival Village as the Campbell Lane stretch of clothing, snacks, handicrafts and decorations. Murukku, henna and jasmine or marigold garlands are the three things the STB page bothers to explain, and they are the right three. Murukku is rice and lentil flour, piped into coils and fried. Buy a small bag first. It goes stale. Henna on the hands is a queue, not a five-minute add-on. Garlands are for temples and doorways. If you are not going into Sri Veeramakaliamman or Sri Srinivasa Perumal, skip the garland and buy sweets instead.

Tekka Centre is the food stop that does not need a festival stall. Mutton biryani, fish head curry, teh tarik. Prices move. I will not invent a 2026 menu. Eat before 8pm if you want a seat. After that the light-up crowd fills every table that faces the road.

Do not drive. In 2025 LISHA closed Hastings Road and parts of Serangoon Road for the switch-on and the Utsavam parade. Expect the same kind of closure this year even if the exact Saturday is still unannounced. Buses 23, 64, 65, 67, 131, 139, 147, 166 and 170 still drop on Serangoon Road on ordinary nights. On ceremony night, take the MRT.

Serangoon Road through Little India, the Deepavali light-up corridor

A 90-minute loop that does not punish a stroller

Get out at Little India Exit A. Walk to the junction of Serangoon Road and Sungei Road. That is the south end. Walk north under the arches. Duck into Campbell Lane when the stalls start. Do not reverse the whole road. At Race Course Road you can cut back toward Rochor and ride one stop rather than retrace. Temples stay open late in the season. Dress with shoulders and knees covered if you go in. Shoes off. Phones down inside the shrine rooms.

If you are coming from NEX, the North East Line is eight minutes. Do both in one night only if the kids still have legs after the mall. Most families should pick one. The mall is air-conditioned and has toilets on every floor. The street is the actual festival.
